Redefining Identity: Coping with the Emotional Impact of Diagnosis and Change

How can this event help me?

Receiving a diagnosis of a chronic condition can bring significant emotional and psychological challenges. It is normal to experience feelings of sadness, loss, or uncertainty as you adjust to changes in your identity, daily life, and future plans. Processing these emotions can be difficult, and knowing how to navigate them isn’t always clear. Adjusting takes time, but understanding how to manage these feelings can make a meaningful difference to your well-being. This session will explore the emotional impact of diagnosis and provide guidance on processing difficult emotions, rebuilding confidence, and developing resilience. Psychologist Adrian Comensoli will offer insights into coping strategies, self-compassion, and ways to redefine your identity beyond your condition.

Join Adrian for a thoughtful discussion where he’ll cover:

  • Understanding the Emotional Impact of Diagnosis: Learn how a diagnosis can affect your mental and emotional well-being, from shifts in self-identity to managing feelings of grief, anxiety, or uncertainty about the future.
  • Developing Healthy Coping Strategies: Explore evidence-based techniques to process emotions, manage stress, and foster resilience. Adrian will provide practical approaches to help you navigate changes in a way that feels constructive and empowering.
  • Maintaining a Sense of Self Beyond Your Condition: Discover ways to adapt to a new reality while holding onto the activities, relationships, and values that define you. This session will focus on strategies for staying engaged in meaningful pursuits and maintaining a positive self-image.
  • Communicating Needs and Setting Boundaries: Learn how to have open conversations with family, friends, and healthcare providers about what you need emotionally and practically, ensuring you feel supported and understood.
  • Building a Mindset for Long-Term Well-Being: Gain insights into fostering a mindset that promotes personal growth, adaptability, and emotional strength, helping you move forward with confidence.

This session is designed for anyone adjusting to a diagnosis or managing the emotional impact of long-term health changes. Join us on Wednesday, 2 April at 8:00 PM AEDT for this live virtual event. As always, we welcome your questions and discussions to make this an engaging and supportive experience for everyone.
