Bone Densitometry

This technique is pain-free, accurate and has very low radiation—even lower than the radiation involved in a Chest Xray. DEXA scanning can be then used to monitor osteoporosis to assess for deterioration or improvement after treatment.

Since April 2007, the government having recognized how widespread osteoporosis is, has agreed to fund DEXA scanning for all people over the age of 70. Other people who should be screened include:

  • Anyone with a Fracture that occurred without much trauma
  • Patients on long-term Steroid treatment
  • Patients with conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Chronic Liver or Kidney Disease, Hyperthyroidism, Malabsorption, Hypogonadism

BJC Health has installed a Lunar Prodigy Bone Densitometer capable of producing high-quality DEXA scans at our Parramatta site. This service will be entirely BULK-BILLED for patients with an appropriate medical indication, as well as a doctor’s referral.
