Exercise Physiology

What is Exercise Physiology?

While more and more people have heard of the term “Exercise Physiologist” or ”EP”, there is still a lot of confusion about what an Exercise Physiologist (EP) does. An EP is a University quailified Allied Health professional that specialises in prescribing exercise to prevent AND manage chronic diseases, injuries and disabilities.

While most people are aware of the importance of regular exercise, many remain unsure about the types of exercise that they should be doing and how often. Exercise, like medicine, has a dose-related response. This means that the type, intensity and frequency of exercise need to be considered and monitored to have an optimal effect and also to ensure that the exercises are appropriate for each individuals medical condition.

As well as making sure that the exercises are both safe and effective, EP’s are trained to assist in the development and implementation of strategies to overcome motivational barriers and compliance problems.

Through tertiary training EPs gain a comprehensive understanding of the body and its physiology, learning about various medical conditions and medications and their impact on a person’s ability to exercise. In addition, EP’s complete a minimum of 500 hours of practical experience in both clinical and hospital settings under the guidence of qualified Health Professionals before they are accredited. It is this in-depth knowledge and experience that differentiates an EP from a personal trainer, and makes them the health professional of choice for anyone with an increased risk of chronic disease.

Do I need a Referral?

A referral is not necessary to visit an EP as a private patient, however it is common for EP’s to work closely with other health professionals such as General Practitioners and Physiotherapists to develop exercise programs that can be done at home or in the community.

If you have been referred by your GP under an Enhanced Primary Care Plan you may be eligible for Medicare Rebates. If you have private health insurance that covers Exercise Physiology (Extras Cover), you may be able to claim a rebate from your health insurance provider.
