Urinary incontinence is the loss of urine when you don’t expect or desire it. Almost half of all women will experience incontinence at some point in their lifetime. Women who have just delivered a baby and women in menopause are most at risk.
While there are different types, stress and urge incontinence are most common. Stress incontinence is losing urine when there is a stress on your body or bladder such as a laugh or cough. Urge incontinence is when you have a strong need to urinate and experience a sudden loss of urine.
Incontinence is often seen as a normal consequence of aging, giving birth or being a woman. This is not true.
Some believe the only way to address incontinence is through surgery. This too is incorrect. Simple exercises taught by your Physiotherapist along with some key lifestyle changes can effectively treat and change incontinence.
The Physiotherapy exercises involve turning the pelvic floor muscles on and off. Learning how to use this important muscle group will help you re-achieve control of your bladder.
Specially trained physiotherapists can determine what type of incontinence you have, what muscles you need to train, strengthen, or even learn to relax, and how to properly adapt your lifestyle.
